The Suitcase Clinic is a student run organization built upon the partnership between UC Berkeley undergraduates and students of the Joint Medical Program that aims to provide essential social and medical services to marginalized populations in the Bay Area and beyond. In addition, the Suitcase Clinic has been an active participant in the movement to educate students about social justice and inequality through its class, offered each semester. Students have the opportunity to incorporate aspects of critical social justice theory into practice, and join a community that holds shared values of equality and humanism. In its 26 years of service, the Suitcase Clinic has built upon the shoulders of giants who have gone on to become successful doctors, economists, engineers, and professors among others.
The Suitcase Clinic fills a unique space that connects the campus and the city of Berkeley together and offers opportunities for communal learning, empowerment, and relationship building. No other organization has been able to so powerfully impact the homeless and low income population in the city of Berkeley while also providing students with a community with which to grow together. |
