Faculty Advisors – PEACE

Below are the faculty advisers who have worked with PEACE. These advisers serve as mentors for the officer board and ensure that PEACE makes a significant impact in various undergraduate science courses. The officer board is extremely grateful for these individuals because they have helped PEACE establish its presence on campus.

**If you have a question about our advisers, please first contact the PEACE officer board, and they will help you get in touch!**

Professor Alan Shabel

Professor Shabel is a mammalogist and a professor in the department of Integrative Biology at UC Berkeley. He consistently works to ensure that his students make the most of their undergraduate experience – both academically and socially. During the year, he generally teaches the Ecology (Fall Semester)/ Evolution (Spring Semester) modules in the Biology 1B course. Professor Shabel has been a fundamental part of PEACE and strongly supports its mission to promote cooperation within undergraduate science courses!

Professor Peter Marsden

Professor Marsden is a student favorite! He teaches a wide variety of courses within the Chemistry Department. He loves conversing with students and seeing undergraduates so involved in the education process; he thinks that PEACE can significantly change the way students learn and approach different aspects of Chemistry!

Professor Anne Baranger

Professor Baranger is an organic chemist, and she recently joined UC Berkeley as the new Director of Undergraduate Chemistry. This has not only increased her involvement in chemical education, but also given her a chance to revise the way Chemistry is taught at UC Berkeley.  Thus, when she heard about PEACE, she was excited to see how it could have an effect on the students’ perceptions of Chemistry. She hopes that PEACE can effectively cater to the students’ needs and help them succeed both in Chemistry and any other course they pursue. Aside from her administrative involvement in Chemistry, Professor Baranger has previously taught Chemistry 3A and Chemistry 112A!

Professor Marjorie Shapiro

Joining the University in 1990, Professor Shapiro is a big part of the Physics Department at UC Berkeley and has conducted quite a bit of groundbreaking research in particle physics. Aside from her research interests, Professor Shapiro cares greatly about teaching physics to undergraduates; she has previously taught Physics 8A (Newtonian Mechanics) and Physics 8B (Electricity and Magnetism) – both of which are geared toward introducing undergraduates to the different applications of physics. Professor Shapiro hopes that PEACE can help make Physics more fun and appealing to new students.
