“In our post-8 am Bio 1A lecture haze, my friends and I wandered over to Yali’s to get some caffeine into our systems. While we waited for our drinks and talked about our first week of school, I briefly mentioned to one of my friends, Billal, that I already felt a little bit behind in Physics 8A. Having never taken a physics class, it was hard for me to process all the equations and concepts being thrown at us in lecture. Immediately, Billal said that he’d be happy to help me out whenever I had any questions. So, over a medium coffee and a Dirty Chai, Billal explained to me all about position, velocity, acceleration, and vectors. It was great to have someone who had already taken the class and succeeded in it take me step by step through concepts I didn’t really understand. Apurva has been an enormous help to me just in the brief time I’ve done tutoring sessions with her. Billal tutored me in Chem 3B, a notoriously tricky class, and I really enjoyed his help! Not only is he a great tutor but also a great friend who has been there to help many people through their emotional, and academic hardships. He has restored my love for Berkeley Science and helped me through very difficult times. Whether is it through answering a question over the phone at 1 am or tutoring me in my apartment at 2 am–he was always there for me (and for the pizza I appeased him with). He is working with a great group to alleviate the larger issues of having an uncollaborative pre-med environment in Berkeley. My experience with PEACE has been nothing but great so far! From the very beginning, they have been so quick to help me and meet my needs in finding a tutor and getting me help. Billal started tutoring me Spring semester of 2014 for General Chemistry and that was such a blessing. I have no doubt that without his help, I would not have been able to succeed in that class. Ka tutored me in Cantonese. Even though I never confirmed a meeting time with him, he let me know where he would be in case I wanted a tutoring session. Before we began our session, he asked a lot of questions to gauge how often I wanted help and didn’t hesitate to offer me the help I needed. When we went over pronunciations, he quizzed me periodically to ensure that I understood the vocabulary and grammar. He even offered to record some of my lessons for me!
I definitely felt my grasp of Cantonese improved during our session. I am just amazed at how thorough, kind and professional Ka was and am looking forward to future sessions.

Billal is super helpful! He and I have only worked together once so far, but he really helped me work through the concepts and the why behind MCB C100A. The second midterm material for this course has a lot of formulas and numbers. It can be super easy to ignore the concepts behind these numbers, but Billal helped me to see the big picture of how to approach many problems, not just the few on my homework set.

When it came time to deciding which college to attend, I was deciding between Cal and UC Davis. Cal wasn’t an appealing choice because of its reputation for being difficult! I knew I was going to pre-med so going to Cal didn’t seem like a very good choice.
Luckily, I decided to do some research whether all the cutthroat competition at Berkeley was true or not. I’ve heard stories that people would burn others’ notes so they would fail a midterm and lower the curve but I didn’t know if it was true or not. I came across Billal’s article about his pre-med experience at Cal. I sent his article to all of my friends who were also struggling with this very same decision and they really appreciated the article. (They all come to Cal now!) His article really demystified Cal’s competitive atmosphere. Rather than being in direct competition with others, it’s really about conquering ourselves with time-management and resource utilization. Without PEACE Tutoring, I probably wouldn’t be attending UC Berkeley right now, nor would I be enjoying everything the vibrant Berkeley community has to offer.

It was very helpful to go over the material with a tutor. It was especially great that PEACE was able to accommodate my needs at such short notice and I definitely found it very reassuring consider the session was held the night just before my midterm. Christine has been super helpful! She’s always willing to accommodate to meet up with me even on a short notice. She asks me to send her lecture slides so that she can get an idea of the professors style as well as determine ways ahead of time to articulate the information in a way I will understand it. On the first day we met, she wrote an outline of the content I wanted to go over with examples for me to do by myself.

During tutoring, he made sure I understood the concepts and he just generally seemed like he cared about my learning and was patient during times when I had difficulty understanding concepts. Sometimes, he would even reach out to me during the semester to ask how I was doing in the course. He’s a very busy person but as a tutor, he made sure to be able to work with our busy schedules so I could get help when I needed it. I’m taking Chem 3B next semester and I’m intending to keep getting help for him next semester too! Billal is not only an excellent tutor, but a wonderful person and anyone is lucky to know him.

My friend told me about Peace tutoring last semester when I was struggling with Bio 1B, but I didn’t have time in my schedule to fit it in. When I signed up for Peace Tutoring for Chem 3A, I received a response the same day. I was able to set up an appointment to meet with my tutor for the next week. My tutor, Nick, replied to my emails very promptly and was accommodating to my schedule. When we met for tutoring, he was very helpful and extremely patient. Peace Tutoring provides fantastic tutors.
