How Do I Know What Clubs Are Right For Me?

Written by Jennifer To (PEACE Advisor)

As a freshman, I remember being bombarded by students passing out flyers to my while I walked through Sproul on my way to class. College is very different from high school, and one of aspects that makes college so unique is the immense amount of school clubs on campus. There are more than 1,200 student-run organizations on campus, so many that it can often become difficult to discern which is the best fit is for you!

To choose the right club, it is important to keep an open mind to what different organizations have to offer. One can very easily join one club because all their friends are joining it too, but later discover it was not a right fit. For me personally, I first narrow my choices by deciding what major I am interested in, and what organizations will help me further pursue that field of study. Besides looking into clubs that are academically oriented, I would also consider looking into clubs that pertain to your hobbies. Do you enjoy dancing? Singing? Art? Video games? Sports? Part of the college experience is not just to study endlessly for your exams, but also to make friends and have fun, and joining a club with members that share the same interests as you is a great way to do that.

However, once you have narrowed your choices down to your specific interests, you may have noticed that there are still a lot of clubs that offer similar things. I remember when I was first looking into what clubs to join as a freshmen, and what I have learned from it is that you really need to attend some of the clubs’ meetings in order to get a good understanding of where you will fit best. There is only so much information you can get from speaking to a club representative for a minute or so, so it is important to attend informational meetings and get to know the officers of the club.

In the end, what matters the most is what you make out of the club. You can choose to join ten different clubs, or join a few that you feel you can genuinely dedicate your time into. As with your classes, you get out of a club the time that you put into it. Many clubs offer rewarding experiences and events that can help you grow and mature as a person, and it is up to you to decide if you want to dedicate your time to them.
