Focus on your Dream, Not your GPA

College is a time in your life where you’re exploring what you really want to do with your life. It’s a really though decision, because you have to really dig deep inside yourself to figure out what kind of career you want. However, a lot of students have the wrong perspective on choosing a major or career-path. They view their goals as problematic, not idealistic.

For example, let’s say a student is confused as to what major they want to choose. They think about choosing MCB and becoming a pre-medical student, but then think they won’t be able to maintain that high of a GPA. Then, they consider being Pre-Haas, but believe it’s too cutthroat and competitive. I personally believe “shopping around” for majors like this and thinking what “works” best is a bad idea. If you think about a goal you have, and keep worrying about: if I don’t get this many points on an exam, that will happen, or if I don’t get over this many points on an exam I will get that kind of grade, you aren’t going to perform well overall and your likely not going to achieve your dreams and get the major you want.

When your thinking about a career-path, the best way to succeed in what you want, is to pick a major you really love, and career you dream about, and stick with it, no matter what. No matter what it takes, no matter what kind of grades you might get, no matter what you have to do for it, you don’t give up on it. When you observe things through that perspective, you’re not going to feel like studying, classes, and school is a problem, but a stepping stone to get you the life you want to live.
