Importance of Self Care
Written by Samantha Wong (PEACE advisor)
With the semester more than halfway over, it’s more important than ever to finish the semester strong. Unfortunately, students tend to get sick around this time of the year as well, and I’ve seen many of my friends, roommates, and classmates suffer from the characteristic sniffles and coughs of the flu season. While it’s impossible to avoid getting sick entirely, here are some ways to best prevent yourself from catching the bug that’s been going around.
1. Sleep – With the amount of homework, studying, extracurriculars, and other obligations in our lives, it’s almost impossible to get the recommended 7-8 hours of sleep per night. However, sleep is crucial to help maintain your immune system and ease the stress you might be feeling from school. Try and sneak in short 15-25 minute naps between study sessions to help maintain your focus and alertness.
2. Vitamin C – While vitamin C is not as effective once you’ve come down with the cold or flu, it’s a great way to help maintain your immune system. You can take vitamin C in tablets, Emergen-C, or fruit!
3. Sanitize – As you probably know, germs are most easily spread through touching infected surfaces and touching your face afterwards. Avoid touching your face as much as possible and make sure to wash your hands and/or use hand sanitizer before eating. If you’re already sick, wash your hands frequently to prevent the spread of germs!
4. Exercise – Exercise is a great way to de-stress, take a study break, and boost your immune system. Head over to the RSF or take a peaceful stroll around campus!
5. De-stress – Stress can really wear down your immune system and make you more susceptible to getting sick. To de-stress, take study breaks to relax or nap (but not excessively) and/or check out other PEACE blogs regarding meditation and other ways to handle stress!
Midterm season is tough, but it’s even tougher if you have to get over an illness along with studying. Make sure to take steps to stay healthy so you can be in the best shape to take your exams!
