What are Healthcare Locations Closest to Me?
Written by Christopher Wang (PEACE advisor)
It’s always a good idea to scope out your surroundings and know the approximate locations of services for you in the event that something should happen. Exposure to stress during exam weeks and impending finals decrease the resiliency of the immune system. Someone will be getting sick, and it may spread to you, especially in closed confined spaces like the dorms. When I was living in Unit 1, flu and cold were rampant during the season. You may feel tired and lethargic, and it would be in your best interest to receive care. But where? Fortunately, there are multiple options in Berkeley, and depending on your insurance, may be worthwhile to receive care. Here are some options.
University Health Services Tang Center: The Tang center is a collection of clinics staffed independently. The cost for treatment is mostly covered by the SHIP insurance, although there is a $15 copay. You also have to pay for your prescription drugs like inhalers. Lab fees are 10%, so if you want to do some bloodwork, prepare your wallet. The fee itself isn’t much, but highly specialized tests may be more expensive than one is willing to pay. Vaccines and immunizations are free, so students interested in volunteering for healthcare services should consider getting MMR immunizations here. There is no emergency room here and the services are limited to primary care, meaning that serious illnesses and injuries should be seen at a hospital instead.
Alta Bates Summit Medical Center: One of the closest hospitals, located near Telegraph Ave. and Ashby Ave. Has an emergency room and specialized facilities and is an ambulance center. Many people choose this location for injuries that require scans or severe illnesses. SHIP covers 100% after a $100 copay for emergency room services.
Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center: Located on Broadway and Howe St., this hospital offers many benefits to those with insurance plans from Kaiser Permanente. This location can be accessed via BART or the 851 bus line.
UC Berkeley Optometry: The Meredith W. Morgan UC Eye Center is located on campus in Minor Hall. Students with SHIP can receive glasses frames or contact lenses for free once per year. Some treatments for sight and vision correction are also covered. Check the guidelines for SHIP optometry if you are looking for specialized services.
Campus Dental: Located on University Ave., Campus Dental offers dental services to UC Berkeley students. Under SHIP, you can receive two teeth cleanings for free per year, and some treatments are discounted.
If you are a student with SHIP, you should utilize it to maximize the benefits from paying for it. Take advantage of the services offered to you, and don’t forget that your health is your priority!
