Our organization also impacts the greater community through our outreach efforts by promoting STEM outreach (particularly regarding bioengineering) to underserved K-12 schools in local area such as Oakland, CA. In addition to these leadership-building and professional development opportunities in the community, we seek to foster a supportive environment within our group as well for our members. We provide mentorships to ensure that our members have positive and welcoming undergraduate experiences because we believe their health and well-being are key to their academic and professional success. Furthermore, BMES maintains strong relations with the Department of Bioengineering, the College of Engineering, and the Berkeley community as a whole. We aim to actively engage our organization with our campus partners to ensure that our members receive the greatest amount of professional interaction necessary for their professional and academic success.
The Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) aims to create a professional, academic, and social network among UC Berkeley undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, and alumni. BMES was founded in 2000 and membership is open to all UC Berkeley undergraduates interested in the field of biomedical engineering. BMES strives to create an inclusive, tight-knit, and supportive community. We aim to include not just those in the Bioengineering Department, but any and all individuals interested in the growing potential and possibilities of biotechnology. We are the largest bioengineering club on campus and the third largest engineering organization at UC Berkeley. Our members come from diverse backgrounds, such as students majoring in Bioengineering, Molecular and Cell Biology, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and Material Science and Engineering, as well as transfer students.
